It'sTime to Start...GO

Simple question to start off this Friday, what is holding you back?

My guess there is something really want to do and you are delaying starting. The hardest part to doing anything is just getting started. We fill our minds with doubt, we question our intentions and ultimately fail to start day after day. Why is that?

In all cases there is some root cause stopping you from doing it. It is not because the kids distracted you or because you are too tired. There is more to it than that, these are just the simple answers to it.

My son decided this week he was ready to start working out. He has a rough life, wakes up at 9 or 10, chills out for a bit, then goes to work for 6-8 hours. Really, he is a good kid, does a lot for us around the house, etc. and works hard, but I like to give him a hard time because he is a night owl, whereas I definitely am not. Anyway, he told me the night before he was going to workout at 7 and needed me to write up a workout for him. Long story short, I didn’t believe him, I do not program workouts and I was not going to spend my time trying to figure something out for him, if I didn’t believe him. So, I told him, my workouts are on the board, if you want to start, start doing them.

So what happened…his alarm went off at 6:45, 7:00… I think he finally got up around 8 or 9. Kudos to him, he did get up and workout, but not at 7. By the time he finished, then got pretty for work, he was running late for work. The good news, he overcame the hardest part, just getting out of bed and starting.

Whether it is working out, starting a budget, making a phone call, anything, something deeper is holding you back. In my son’s case, it was a lack of desire, a lack of purpose to do it. For me, starting this business was hard, it is still hard. But I’m going to keep going after it and keep working at it. I have to be honest, as much as I appreciate budgeting, I still do not like to do it every month and I procrastinate.

When we are holding ourselves back from doing something there is something underlying and we have to examine ourselves for the why. If we can figure out why we are starting this journey we can take that first critical step that is necessary on this journey. Sometimes we need help, we need accountability to get started. That is where a coach comes in, they bring that accountability, that follow-up, that push that is needed to help you remember your why. The best coaches help you realize why you do what you do. When the kids are in sports, there is no problem telling them to go to practice, but when the sport ends, they are quick to hang up the cleats till next season. Why because there is no accountability.

Get someone to hold you accountable, if not a coach, a close friend or someone you can confide in is perfect. Tell them what you want to do and why and have them hold you accountable. When I started running I used to post my runs on social media, because the likes and comments used to motivate me. Then it was others that kept pushing me to keep going, to get faster and move.

Whatever is holding you back from starting I encourage you to take that step today, right now, get started.
